Not the best of days.

Damn it's hard getting presents for somebody, especially if it's someone you care about. Come birthdays, anniversaries, or Christmas, you'd find me checking in the nearest asylum. I just can't crack my head enough to get the perfect gift for somebody, lazy or not.

First of all, the unspoken rules are cumbersome. You can't get something related to duties, so appliances like vacuums, pots and pans are out. Then you make some leeway for local superstitions, which means no shoes for your spouse, no clocks on birthdays, and whatever else the Fengshui lady says.

After that, you have to make sure it's something of value. The dearer that person is to you, the more you have to fork out. Ripping off the price tag is more out of courtesy, and not for hiding the price, because people always happen to "stumble" into places that sell your gifts and find out how much it really costs.

Then comes self doubt. What if they like it? What if they don't? People say it's the thought that counts, which is why I wouldn't wanna be thought of as someone who doesn't care enough to know what the other person likes.

But — and get this — if they really like something, they probably already have it, and if they don't, it's because they can't afford it. And if they can't, neither can I. So, can they really get what they want even if I knew what they wanted?

Gosh, I hate gift giving events.
